Book Description
The most lively, readable, and authoritative work on the interface between mind science and religion, Neurotheology: Virtual Religion in the 21st Century, has become a classic in its field and a standard by which others are measured.
Teachers, scientists, students, and readers worldwide have found answers they wanted to basic riddles we all face. McKinney’s ability to trace the basis and evolution of religious and metaphysical practice with modern brain scanning technology has been praised by experts in every field, including leading Christian theologian Harvey Cox, the Dalai Lama, and visionary writer Arthur C. Clarke.
What will we experience at death? Why do all religions let us escape hell? Why does God act like your father, not your friend’s father? Why do we get that tunnel of light? How do athletic training and sincere religious practice alter the mind positively? Exactly how did we become “human”? What were we thinking between conception and birth? When did we first notice time?
Be prepared to marvel at how the brain manages our world from moment to moment as it weaves the tapestry of consciousness. Then, be prepared to relax when you finally learn why “heaven” in any religion is not only likely but nearly impossible to avoid for reasons quite acceptable to modern science.
The Harvard-educated author skillfully re-examines cutting-edge brain science through social and cultural contexts to re-examine birth, infancy, life, and death through radically new perspectives.
If you enjoy thinking but want deeper answers, this is an owner’s manual for your mind. If you are religious, but enjoy science, this is the book you’ve been searching for. Neurotheology earned honorable mention in the Writer’s Magazine First Works competition and remains the classic in a growing field.

About the Author
Laurence McKinney is an entrepreneur. He marketed his college rock band, and when a beachgoer inquired where to rent a surfboard, he opened one in a parking lot and, in two years, had three owned and three franchised locations.
After graduating from Harvard Business School, he quickly organized a multimedia publishing startup, introducing him to leading neuroscience authorities. This led to the development of a pharmaceutical patent, which made it possible for GW Pharmaceutical’s cannabis-based Epidiolex® to control seizures in young patients with epilepsy.
Here he began to write his first draft, but realizing he needed better grounding in world religions, he entered Harvard Divinity School in 1977, listing his religion as “spiritual psychobiology”.
He enjoyed studies under prominent scholars George McRae, Richard Reinhold Niebuhr, and formed a lasting friendship with Harvey Cox, prolific author and theologian.
Leaving before graduating to return to business consulting, he met a scholarly Tibetan lama teaching at Tufts and needed a Green Card. To aid in this purpose, McKinney formed a Buddhist Institute and managed various activities. As Thupten Kalsang enjoyed a long relationship with the Dalai Lama, this resulted in a period of intensive study and practice and meetings with His Holiness and other prominent religious figures.
Finding numerous parallels between the Buddhist belief that our reality is largely self-created, his next draft was able to draw on rich insights acquired at Harvard Divinity School and the Institute. Kalsang got his Green Card, and the Dalai Lama was given an early first version of Neurotheology in 1981. He found it interesting and added to his growing study of the modern mind sciences.
It was nearly inevitable that such a variety of expertise would lead to fresh insights, organized and presented as a business plan clearly written to engage, entertain, and inform.
